Cyanotypes on Watercolor Paper.

This series investigates human thought patterns, routines, cycles, and how they shape our societal structures and the environment we inhabit. Each piece begins either by meticulously arranging fragments of tape on paper to create intricately structured compositions, or by pouring the cyanotype mixture onto the paper and intuitively moving the liquid into its final form. It is a structure-to-chaos or chaos-to-structure approach; side-by-side they create a dialogue of harmony and tension. I then expose the cyanotype mixture to UV rays and develop it in water; peeling off each fragment of tape to reveal a mosaic-like assemblage out of the unexposed negative spaces, or rinsing the excess exposed mixture to tease out the layers. Lastly, I sprinkle, throw, or rub sodium carbonate onto the prints to tone the colors and disrupt the structured patterns of each composition. The resulting mix of blues and yellows contemplates the unresolvable tensions between togetherness and individuality, order and chaos, as intricate structures give way to improvisational gestures.
